City Council Establishes Civilian Police Oversight Day to Recognize the Importance of Independent Oversight in Philadelphia
The Philadelphia City Council unanimously passed a resolution establishing June 9 as “Civilian Police Oversight Day. ” This designation honors the legacy of independent civilian oversight in policing and aims to reinforce community trust and public safety. Councilmember Curtis Jones Jr. noted that civilian oversight has been empowered and is essential for transparency and justice. The resolution acknowledges the historical context, including the creation of the Police Advisory Commission in 1994 and the Citizens Police Oversight Commission (CPOC) in 2021, which was supported by over 500,000 Philadelphians.
It also reflects on pivotal moments like the police killings of George Floyd and Walter Wallace Jr. Tonya McClary, Executive Director of CPOC, stated that this recognition honors the activists and community members who advocated for accountability. The resolution symbolizes the City’s commitment to independent oversight and community-led public safety. An official copy will be presented to the CPOC to signify this commitment.
