Protect yourself from ticks and Lyme disease

Philadelphia, PALocal News

Philadelphia's health department warns residents about the risks posed by blacklegged ticks, known to transmit Lyme disease and other tickborne illnesses. Ticks remain active throughout the year, increasing the risk during outdoor activities in the city's parks. To mitigate this threat, the health department advises using EPA-approved tick repellents and wearing protective clothing that covers most skin. Upon returning indoors, individuals should conduct thorough checks for ticks, particularly on children and pets, and wash clothing in high heat to kill any remaining ticks. Lyme disease can cause serious health issues if left untreated, including complications affecting the heart and nervous system.

Early symptoms often manifest as flu-like signs, alongside a distinctive bull's-eye rash at the bite site. Residents are urged to seek medical attention if they experience these symptoms following a tick bite. Staying informed and cautious allows Philadelphians to enjoy their city's green spaces while minimizing health risks.
