Two former Delaware County officials sentenced to prison for 2021 election fraud scheme

Philadelphia, PALocal News

A federal judge in Pennsylvania sentenced former Delaware County officials Md Nurul Hasan and Md Rafikul Islam to prison for their involvement in a scheme to commit election fraud in 2021. Hasan received a 36-month sentence, while Islam was sentenced to a year and a day, both with supervised release and fines. Judge Harvey Bartle III criticized the prosecutors for recommending lighter sentences, emphasizing the seriousness of their crimes. The three men conspired to fraudulently register nearly three dozen non-residents to vote in Millbourne, undermining the electoral process. Hasan, who lost the Democratic primary, attempted a write-in campaign but ultimately lost to Mahabubul Tayub in the general election.

The third defendant, Md Munsur Ali, is awaiting sentencing next week and faces pressure to resign from the council. The case raises concerns about election integrity, as officials warn it could fuel conspiracy theories about electoral fraud. Both Hasan and Islam are ordered to begin serving their sentences by August 15.
