Grays Ferry residents create virtual archive to preserve neighborhood's history

Philadelphia, PALocal News

The Grays Ferry Community Archive launched by Philly Thrive serves as a virtual museum to preserve the neighborhood's history and culture. It features recorded interviews, a history of the area, and a map of significant landmarks. Additionally, the initiative plans to create a mural honoring community members who have died, with submissions for photos due by June 30. Sonya Sanders, a lifelong resident, emphasized the importance of unity in overcoming adversities like rising rents, which increased from $914 to $1,115 between 2016 and 2021, and a sharp decline in Black residents from 71% to 33%. The archive's creation followed the COVID-19 pandemic, during which members conducted interviews and researched historical materials.

Sanders expressed that the project empowers residents by reminding them of their legacy and strength. The website also invites newcomers to understand the neighborhood's history and participate in shaping its future. Philly Thrive's efforts highlight the need for community connection and awareness in a changing urban landscape.
