Report Trump Administration to Partially Fund SNAP Food Benefits

Parsippany, NJLocal News

The Trump Administration confirmed it will partially fund the SNAP food benefit program during the government shutdown, adhering to a federal court order. Approximately 826,094 SNAP recipients in New Jersey are affected, although the specific amounts and timing of benefits remain uncertain. The program provides assistance to 41. 7 million individuals nationwide, previously referred to as food stamps. Essex, Hudson, Passaic, Camden, and Ocean counties have the most recipients in New Jersey, with Cumberland County having the highest reliance at 18% of its population.

Local food pantries, such as the Salvation Army's Vineland location, report a spike in visitors due to anxiety over benefit delays, serving nearly 1,500 individuals in a single day last week. This figure is a substantial increase compared to the average of 700 individuals served. The situation highlights the stress and urgency faced by families reliant on SNAP benefits during the government shutdown. As the administration moves forward with funding, the clarity on benefit distribution will be crucial for affected families.
