Hunterdon County Man Charged with Discharging a Firearm in a Restaurant

William H. Schmieding, 70, of White House Station, has been charged with multiple firearm-related offenses after an accidental discharge at Frank’s Pizza in Flanders. On October 20, police arrived at the scene to find an 89-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her left leg. The investigation revealed that Schmieding, who has a valid handgun permit, inadvertently fired his Smith and Wesson Bodyguard while attempting to clear ammunition. The victim was promptly transported to a local hospital and is now in stable condition.

Schmieding's charges include two counts of Aggravated Assault and violations related to firearm carrying laws, indicating the severity of the incident. He remains in detention at the Morris County Correctional Facility, awaiting court proceedings under the Criminal Justice Reform Act. This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding firearm safety and responsible carrying practices in public places.
