Voters to Decide if Trust Fund Will Support Open Space Stewardship

Parsippany, NJLocal News

Morris County voters will decide on November 4 whether to amend the Preservation Trust Fund to allow stewardship of permanently preserved lands. The initiative aims to utilize existing funds for habitat restoration, invasive species management, and green infrastructure improvements without raising taxes. Morris County Commissioner Deputy Director Stephen Shaw stated that implementing a stewardship program is a logical next step in their preservation efforts. The ballot question has been formally authorized by the county commissioners and aims to enhance public understanding through outreach initiatives. Eligible activities include wildlife habitat restoration and planning, while ineligible activities encompass routine maintenance and land acquisition.

The committee that proposed this change met multiple times and consulted experts to ensure a comprehensive evaluation. The program will initially focus on municipal properties, with future plans to potentially include nonprofit-owned lands. This effort reflects over 30 years of community support for preservation in Morris County.
