Tow Truck Operator Killed on I-287 Remembered as Kind and Helpful

Daniel Ortiz, a 24-year-old tow truck operator, tragically died on July 2 after being struck by a Jeep while assisting a disabled vehicle on Interstate 287 South in Harding Township. The incident occurred around 11:42 a. m. as Ortiz, known as "DJ," worked for Ron and Sons Towing. Authorities reported that the Jeep veered onto the shoulder, colliding with Ortiz, the tow truck, and a disabled Honda.

Despite being transported to a hospital, Ortiz succumbed to his injuries, while the Jeep driver suffered minor injuries. Ron and Sons Towing, a trusted AAA-certified business with over 35 years of service, emphasized the need for compliance with New Jersey’s Move Over Law in their tribute to Ortiz. The company described him as a kind and helpful person who was like family to them. The tragedy underscores the daily risks faced by tow truck operators and roadside workers. Investigators continue to look into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
