City of York to allow outdoor dining on N. George Street with new traffic barrier
The City of York will now allow outdoor dining on North George Street by installing a traffic barrier to maintain two-way traffic. This change comes after Mayor Michael Helfrich initially rejected the idea due to concerns over safety and financial implications for public works. Restaurant owners, including those from The Handsome Cab, expressed disappointment with the earlier decision. The newly installed barriers will feature a base color and permit restaurants to add creative touches, fostering a unique dining atmosphere. This initiative aims to enhance the local economy while ensuring safety measures remain in place.
The city spokesperson highlighted the importance of creating a welcoming environment for outdoor dining. The 100 block of N. George Street will serve as the primary location for this dining experience. This development reflects a broader trend of cities adapting public spaces to support local businesses.
