As Lancaster students return to school, superintendent says budget delay poses challenges
Students in the School District of Lancaster return to school this week, navigating challenges posed by state budget delays. Superintendent Dr. Keith Miles emphasized that 60% of district revenue comes from federal and state sources, which are currently delayed. This funding issue has already led to layoffs within district offices, although teacher positions are still filled. Miles called on lawmakers to unite around a budget that supports educational needs statewide.
In response to these challenges, student leaders are working to create an inclusive environment for their peers. Sophomore Amylee Cruz reassured classmates that it is normal to feel nervous about returning to school. Additionally, Wickersham Elementary recently produced over 40 pounds of produce through project-based learning, demonstrating the district's commitment to innovative education. The district is also expanding its narrative program to help freshmen transition from middle school, fostering a sense of belonging.
