Radius Recycling ordered to reduce pollution into San Francisco Bay

Oakland, CALocal News

The EPA finalized a settlement with Radius Recycling to mitigate pollution from its West Oakland facility into San Francisco Bay. This agreement stems from the company's violations of its operating permit under the Clean Water Act, specifically regarding excessive zinc, copper, and acute water toxicity in wastewater discharges. Radius must install a granular activated carbon treatment unit within 30 days to ensure compliance with federal limits. Furthermore, the company is required to create and submit a comprehensive water pollution prevention plan within 60 days to enhance site inspections and maintenance operations. EPA officials highlighted the importance of this agreement for improving community health and the ecological state of the Bay.

The presence of high metal levels in the water poses significant risks to both humans and wildlife. This settlement represents a critical step in addressing ongoing environmental violations and securing a cleaner local environment. Radius Recycling's commitment to these changes underscores the regulatory efforts aimed at safeguarding water quality.
