New video shows CHP chase, moments leading up to crash that killed Oakland teacher

Oakland, CALocal News

The California Highway Patrol released video footage that illustrates the chaotic moments leading to Dr. Marvin Boomer's death after being struck by a car driven by Eric Hernandez-Garcia, 19. On May 28, officers attempted to stop Hernandez-Garcia's vehicle, but they called off the pursuit due to his reckless driving. For the next 13 minutes, he drove at speeds nearing 100 mph, ultimately crashing into a minivan before losing control and hitting Dr. Boomer and another pedestrian.

This incident resulted in multiple felony charges against Hernandez-Garcia, with his attorney claiming he panicked when officers pursued him. Boomer’s death has profoundly affected the Oakland community, particularly at Castlemont High School, where he was a respected teacher. The CHP described Hernandez-Garcia's driving as a flagrant disregard for public safety. He was eventually apprehended and booked into Santa Rita jail.
