Oakland, CALocal News

The California Highway Patrol released video footage that illustrates the chaotic moments leading to Dr. Marvin Boomer's death after being struck by a car driven by Eric Hernandez-Garcia, 19. On May 28, officers attempted to stop Hernandez-Garcia's vehicle, but they called off the pursuit due to his reckless driving. For the next 13 minutes, he drove at speeds nearing 100 mph, ultimately crashing into a minivan before losing control and hitting Dr. Boomer and another pedestrian.

This incident resulted in multiple felony charges against Hernandez-Garcia, with his attorney claiming he panicked when officers pursued him. Boomer’s death has profoundly affected the Oakland community, particularly at Castlemont High School, where he was a respected teacher. The CHP described Hernandez-Garcia's driving as a flagrant disregard for public safety. He was eventually apprehended and booked into Santa Rita jail. Hernandez-Garcia's next court appearance is set for June 20.
