Oakland, CALocal News

The Oakland Police Department's Alcohol Beverage Action Team (ABAT) shut down an illegal marijuana operation during a May 15, 2025, inspection of a smoke shop on International Boulevard. Investigators seized marijuana, flavored tobacco products, untaxed out-of-state tobacco, and adulterated food items, revealing the business lacked the required licenses to sell cannabis or tobacco. One adult male was cited for possession of a controlled substance. Sergeant Jennifer Sena noted the critical role of community complaints in initiating the investigation, highlighting collaboration with the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration and the California Department of Public Health. Following the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office and the Oakland City Attorney's Office for potential criminal and civil charges.

The ABAT unit operates under the California Department of Justice Proposition 56 Tobacco Enforcement Grant, which supports efforts to disrupt illicit sales. This operation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in regulating cannabis and tobacco sales in Oakland. Community engagement remains vital in ensuring compliance and enhancing public safety.
