Network issues took down BART earlier today. The whole control system will be modernized soon

Oakland, CALocal News

BART transit system shut down for several hours today due to a network connectivity issue affecting train visibility. The disruption began at 4:24 a. m. and prompted thousands to seek alternative transportation until service resumed around 9:30 a. m.

Staff at the Lake Merritt station in Oakland could not monitor track circuits, essential for knowing train locations. General Manager Robert Powers acknowledged the inconvenience, asserting BART’s commitment to reliability. The control system, operational since 1972, has encountered similar shutdowns over the years, raising concerns about its age and efficiency. Former BART Director Rebecca Saltzman noted that while the system is safe, it limits train frequency due to large spacing between them. The agency is currently working on a modernization project, with completion anticipated by 2029 or 2030.

Saltzman emphasized the importance of improving network reliability to enhance overall service.
