AC Transits BRT project increased traffic violence and displaced many businesses, new report says

Oakland, CALocal News

A report by UC Berkeley professors indicates that the construction of AC Transit’s Tempo bus rapid transit service increased traffic casualties by 30% and displaced numerous businesses along International Boulevard. The study criticized the project for its top-down approach to planning, which did not adequately involve community input. At a community meeting, officials, including Oakland’s transportation director, acknowledged the findings, highlighting the need for systemic solutions in future infrastructure projects. While the $237 million BRT project did improve bus speeds and ridership, it also created hazardous conditions for pedestrians, particularly during their walk to median bus stations. The researchers emphasized that reckless driving and traffic violence may have risen due to road changes associated with the BRT.

They aim to present their full report in May, advocating for a shift towards community-centered transportation planning. This study underscores the critical role of local voices in shaping transit policies. Ultimately, the findings call for a reevaluation of how public agencies engage with communities in infrastructure development.
