A new Uptown Oakland restaurant amplifies Afghan classics with contemporary touches

Oakland, CALocal News

Jaji, which opened in January 2025, celebrates Afghan cuisine with a modern twist in Uptown Oakland. Owner Sophia Akbar, whose family fled Afghanistan, designed the restaurant with decor that reflects her heritage, including hand-cut chiffon fabric. The menu features unique dishes like mushroom pekora and Shola-Qorooti Croquettes, created through collaboration with Akbar's family and the Jaji culinary team. Akbar aims to foster inclusivity by welcoming patrons from diverse backgrounds to experience Afghan culture through food. The restaurant's innovative cocktail program, led by beverage director David Kwon, will expand with the upcoming BakBar lounge.

This approach not only honors tradition but also modernizes Afghan dining experiences. Akbar's vision resonates with both Afghan and non-Afghan guests, creating a sense of nostalgia and community. Jaji's blend of heritage and contemporary dining reflects a growing trend in the culinary landscape of Oakland.
