Housing company targeted in Oakland FBI investigation pitched Berkeley too

Oakland, CALocal News

Evolutionary Homes sought contracts in Berkeley while embroiled in an FBI corruption investigation centered on Oakland. Communications between the company and local officials, including Councilmember Ben Bartlett, occurred in 2023 but did not lead to any agreements. Bartlett emphasized his office's commitment to innovative homelessness solutions but opted not to move forward with Evolutionary Homes. The investigation gained public attention after federal agents raided the homes of Oakland’s former mayor and the Duong brothers, who are accused of bribery to secure lucrative contracts. The FBI's inquiry has expanded to include San Leandro, where Councilmember Bryan Azevedo’s home was also raided.

Azevedo, who promoted Evolutionary Homes in his city, expressed concerns about potential legal repercussions. Berkeley officials have not confirmed whether they have received subpoenas from federal authorities, as stated by spokesperson Seung Lee. Despite the lack of charges against Berkeley officials, the city's engagement with Evolutionary Homes raises questions about local governance amid the ongoing investigation.
