City of Oakland Finalizes Hotel Acquisition to Target Unhoused Residents from Three Major Encampments
Oakland completed the acquisition of the Extended Stay America hotel to provide crucial housing for individuals from three major encampments. The hotel will serve as interim housing for up to 150 residents, who will be prioritized based on their previous living situations. In the following year, the property will transition into 125 units of permanent supportive housing, operated by the Housing Consortium of the East Bay. Interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins stated that this project is part of a multi-faceted strategy to address the urgent needs of Oakland's unhoused population. Councilmember Carroll Fife expressed excitement about the project, which gained traction following the securing of an Encampment Resolution Fund grant.
Alameda County Supervisor Nikki Fortunato Bas highlighted the importance of community collaboration in achieving this milestone. The acquisition aims to provide stability and essential services to those affected by homelessness. This initiative marks a significant commitment to improving housing outcomes and reflects Oakland's ongoing efforts to combat the homelessness crisis.
