The Oakland Police Department reported a notable 37% decrease in overall crime for the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Violent crimes declined by 33%, but the department expressed concern over a 15% rise in homicides, from 20 to 23 incidents. Despite this increase, OPD's homicide section achieved a commendable 70% clearance rate, underscoring the effectiveness of their investigative efforts. The reductions are attributed to strong collaboration with community organizations, local businesses, and the dedication of OPD's specialized units such as Ceasefire and the Criminal Investigation Division. Property crimes also saw significant drops; for instance, motor vehicle thefts fell by 46%.

OPD reassured residents that the safety of the community remains its top priority, and every reported crime is taken seriously. Chief Floyd Mitchell emphasized the importance of community engagement in achieving these results. The department remains vigilant and committed to addressing the challenges posed by rising homicide rates.
