Oaklands party restaurant reinvents itself as affordable, family-oriented dining

Oakland, CALocal News

Daytrip, a beloved fermentation-focused restaurant in Oakland, has officially closed, paving the way for a fresh concept named Daytrip Counter, set to open on May 7, 2025. This new establishment will shift towards a family-oriented, affordable dining experience with a focus on "flavor maximalism," particularly through its spit-roasted chicken offerings. Owners Finn Stern and Stella Dennig expressed their relief at closing Daytrip, as it allows them to pursue an exciting new direction. They aim to create a welcoming atmosphere for families while ensuring that employees are paid a living wage despite a reduced staff. The new counter-service model is a strategic move to enhance efficiency and sustainability.

Stern emphasized the importance of affordability, especially after Daytrip struggled with rising costs. With a revamped menu that prioritizes simplicity and quality, Daytrip Counter is poised to become a staple in the Oakland dining scene. This transition reflects a broader trend in the restaurant industry towards more accessible dining options without sacrificing culinary excellence.
