2 separate overturned big rigs cause cleanup and traffic mess across East Bay highways

Oakland, CALocal News

On Wednesday morning, two separate big rig accidents in California's East Bay region led to extensive traffic backups and lane closures. In Oakland, a truck transporting 30,000 to 40,000 pounds of lawn sod overturned, blocking all lanes on westbound Highway 24 near the Caldecott Tunnel. The driver was taken to the hospital for possible injuries, and the cleanup took about five hours, with the freeway reopening around 10 a. m. Meanwhile, in San Leandro, a second big rig, which was hauling produce, overturned and caught fire, causing the northbound I-238 to I-880 connector to remain closed for several hours.

The driver of the San Leandro truck was reported safe, but the incident created a significant mess that required extensive cleanup. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is still investigating the causes of both accidents. Motorists have been advised to seek alternate routes due to ongoing traffic issues. Both accidents highlight the challenges of large vehicle accidents on busy highways and their impact on regional traffic.
