OTS, Caltrans Kick Off Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Public Awareness Campaign

Oakland, CALocal News

The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and Caltrans have launched a new campaign titled "Protect Our Pedestrians. Protect Our Cyclists," aimed at raising awareness about the safety of pedestrians and cyclists in California. This initiative, which coincides with September being designated as California Pedestrian Safety Month, calls on drivers to exercise caution and awareness on the roads. Recent findings from the California Traffic Safety Survey reveal that a considerable portion of the population has experienced unsafe conditions due to speeding cars and drivers failing to stop for pedestrians. OTS Director Barbara Rooney highlighted the importance of fostering a community where all individuals—regardless of their mode of transportation—can travel safely.

In 2022, California recorded 1,158 pedestrian fatalities, representing 26% of all traffic deaths, underscoring the urgency of this campaign. The public service announcements aim to remind drivers to treat pedestrians and cyclists as they would their own friends and family. The campaign will run until September 22, featuring audio messages and social media content to promote responsible driving.
