Hundreds of Oakland students walk out of class, calling for an end to gun violence
Over 100 students at Skyline High School in Oakland participated in a walkout on Tuesday to demand an end to gun violence, spurred by a recent shooting that injured a 15-year-old student. The incident, which resulted in the arrest of two juveniles with ghost guns, led to the school's third lockdown this year. Students voiced their concerns about safety and criticized the administration for failing to communicate effectively during the crisis. Junior Blake Rogers, who organized the protest, highlighted the necessity for the district to take student voices seriously and implement meaningful safety measures. The Alameda County District Attorney confirmed that the victim is recovering, while the protest also served to remember coach John Beam, who had advocated for improved security at Laney College.
Students expressed their frustration over the lack of transparency and the need for proactive safety solutions. This event underscores the ongoing issue of gun violence in schools and the urgent calls for change from the student body. The Oakland Unified School District has yet to respond to the students' claims regarding safety measures.
