First look at Uqbar, West Berkeleys new literary-inspired restaurant

Oakland, CALocal News

Uqbar Mediterranean Cafe is set to open in West Berkeley on November 21, marking the culmination of a long-held dream for founders Benji and Jennie Smith. The couple first discussed owning a restaurant during their first date eight years ago, and their journey has since taken them from Washington, D. C. , to San Francisco, and back to Berkeley. The cafe will occupy the former Tomate Cafe space, emphasizing fresh, locally sourced California produce and Mediterranean-inspired dishes.

The name Uqbar, derived from a Jorge Luis Borges short story, reflects their love of literature and the Mediterranean culture. Benji, diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, focuses on healthy eating, featuring whole grains and vegetables in the menu. The cafe will also offer unique touches, such as table cards named after Mediterranean mythology and a rotating selection of dishes. Signature items will include a lemony, garlic-packed hummus and a specially crafted flatbread. Uqbar aims to create a community-oriented dining experience while celebrating the rich culinary traditions of the Mediterranean region.
