Middle East Market adds cafe, building on its role as Berkeleys Persian hub

Oakland, CALocal News

Middle East Cafe opened in July, building on the legacy of Middle East Market, which has been a cultural hub for Berkeley's Iranian community since 1976. Co-owner Hossein Razavi, who emigrated from Iran, aims to share traditional Persian cuisine, including dishes like koobideh and fesenjan, with a broader audience. The cafe's menu, featuring vegetarian options and generous portions, has garnered attention, especially after the market's previous success on Check, Please, Bay Area. During the pandemic, the Razavis adapted by focusing on take-out, which led them to purchase a more spacious location. Amir, Razavi's son, plays a key role in this family-run establishment, ensuring that their culinary heritage thrives.

The cafe's offerings emphasize the rich flavors of Persian cuisine, attracting a diverse customer base. With a pleasant outdoor patio, the cafe provides a welcoming atmosphere for community gatherings. This venture not only enhances local dining options but also reinforces the cultural significance of Persian food in Berkeley.
