Suspect arrested in shooting of John Beam
Cedric Irving, 27, was arrested by the Oakland Police Department for the shooting of John Beam, the Laney College athletic director, who died from his injuries. Beam had been in critical condition after the shooting, which occurred Thursday in the college’s field house. OPD described the incident as targeted, indicating that Irving knew Beam but lacked a personal relationship. Investigators recovered a firearm linked to the shooting, confirming it matched the bullet casings found at the scene. Community leaders, including Peralta's chancellor, expressed their shock and offered support to those affected by the tragedy.
Mayor Barbara Lee praised law enforcement for their swift response in making the arrest. Irving will be arraigned on November 18 at Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse. This incident has raised concerns within the community regarding safety and support for affected individuals.
