Fire Department debates safe street advocates on Oakland road design

Oakland, CALocal News

The Oakland Fire Department is poised to implement an updated fire code by January 1, focusing on road width requirements for fire truck access. Proposed standards include 20 feet of unobstructed road width for streets with buildings under 30 feet and 26 feet for those over 30 feet. Advocates for safe streets contend that wider roads promote speeding, resulting in significant injuries and fatalities. In 2022, Oakland experienced its deadliest year, with 35 traffic-related deaths. Kevin Dalley from the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission highlighted the tension between fire safety needs and public safety concerns.

While the Fire Department seeks to maintain wider roads for emergency access, advocates push for designs that calm traffic. Ongoing collaboration between the Fire Department and transportation officials aims to address these conflicting priorities. The outcome of these discussions could set a precedent for future road design policies in Oakland.
