Healthcare enrollment starts Nov. 1 in California with big rate hikes
Starting Nov. 1, residents in Alameda County will confront substantial health insurance rate hikes as they enroll in Covered California. Over 82,000 individuals in the county depend on this exchange, with premiums expected to rise by an average of $125 per person per month, a staggering 97% increase. This change comes as Congress allows enhanced premium subsidies to expire, potentially leaving millions of Americans without affordable coverage. Communities of color will bear the brunt of these hikes, as premiums for Black, Latine, and Asian American households may exceed a 100% increase.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates that 4. 2 million people nationwide could lose ACA coverage, with 174,000 Californians at risk. In Alameda County, this could translate to around 5,750 individuals losing their insurance by January. Senator Chuck Schumer has criticized Republicans for their inaction, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Covered California spokesperson Jagdip Dhillon warns that many may go uninsured if the subsidies are not restored.
