Oakland loses another classic hot dog joint, and one Indian restaurant makes way for another
Jot Mahal, a beloved vegetarian Indian restaurant, has closed its College Avenue location in Berkeley, with ownership confirming the change. This closure makes way for a new establishment, Chandni Chowk, which opened on October 28. In a significant loss for Oakland, Kasper’s Hot Dogs has ceased operations after 95 years, as owner Harold Koojoolian prepares for retirement following the death of his wife. The nostalgic neon sign of Kasper’s has already been taken down, but patrons can still enjoy hot dogs at five remaining Caspers locations in the East Bay. Trybe, an Oakland-based nonprofit, has purchased the former Kasper’s location and plans to transform it into a community kitchen and cafe.
This new initiative aims to support local food entrepreneurs by providing a space for them to test their concepts. The closure of these two establishments reflects ongoing changes in the local dining landscape and the impact of personal circumstances on long-standing businesses. The community's response to these closures highlights the significance of these eateries in local culture and history.
