Alameda Co. food bank steps in to help TSA workers, families impacted by government shutdown
The Alameda County Community Food Bank steps in to support TSA employees at Oakland airport facing hardships due to the government shutdown. After their shifts, around 300 TSA workers received essential food items, highlighting the increased need among federal employees without pay. Regi Young, the food bank's executive director, noted that many workers are at risk of financial instability, dealing with rent and other expenses. Kaley Skantz, spokesperson for the airport, stated that essential workers, including TSA and air traffic controllers, are working without pay. Gilbert Galam, representing TSA employees, voiced concerns about the prolonged nature of the shutdown and its effects on workers' livelihoods.
The Alameda Labor Council estimates that 78,000 federal workers in the Bay Area are affected, with 10,400 in Alameda County alone. The food bank aims to alleviate some of the burden by providing food assistance during this crisis. Support from organizations like the food bank is crucial for federal workers struggling to make ends meet during the shutdown.
