Activists gathered in Oakland on Thursday to protest the anticipated deployment of federal officers, including ICE and Customs and Border Protection agents, in the Bay Area. More than 100 demonstrators rallied outside Fruitvale BART Station, voicing demands for the removal of federal enforcement from their communities. Romaine Charite of the Oakland Alliance Against Racism and Political Repression stated, “We want ICE and CPB out of the Bay Area,” citing fears of increased enforcement. The East Bay Democratic Socialists of America and other local organizations organized the event, where participants carried signs advocating for immigrant rights. Dale Harrington, a long-time Oakland resident, compared the current political climate to past grassroots movements in the city.
Student Adelaida, highlighting her undocumented family's challenges, expressed the importance of speaking out for those who cannot. The rally underscores the rising tensions surrounding immigration policy and community safety during the Trump administration. Demonstrators aim to create a supportive environment for immigrant rights and push back against federal actions perceived as harmful.
