How and when to cast a vote on Prop 50

Oakland, CALocal News

Early voting for California's Proposition 50 starts on Saturday, Oct. 25, giving voters the chance to decide on a Congressional redistricting measure. Election Day is scheduled for Nov. 4, with conditional same-day registration permitted for those who have not yet registered. The measure, backed by Governor Gavin Newsom, seeks to allow temporary alterations to the state's Congressional district maps, responding to partisan redistricting efforts by the Texas GOP.

Newsom highlighted the unique targeting of Californians by the Trump Administration and the importance of this measure as a way to fight back. A coalition of progressive organizations, including the California Federation of Labor Unions, is urging voters to support Prop 50. Meanwhile, Charles Munger, Jr. leads the opposition, warning that the measure could further politicize the redistricting process. Munger argues against mirroring Texas's gerrymandering tactics, emphasizing the need for fair practices.

If Prop 50 passes, the new maps would remain in effect only until the next federal census in 2030.
