Jazz quintet finds fans in Oakland retirement communities, playing music from their era
The Bob Roden Quintet performed a live jazz concert at Piedmont Gardens, a retirement community in Oakland, captivating residents with music from their era. Roden, who considers Piedmont Gardens his "home base," noted the unique concert-like atmosphere, where attendees focus on the performance rather than socializing. Ninety-year-old Corky Wick exemplified the audience's engagement, singing along and expressing her desire to dance despite her physical limitations. The setlist featured timeless classics, including “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” evoking fond memories among the residents. Roden, a veteran musician, has a rich background in both music and law, having previously worked at LucasFilm and Pixar.
He re-entered the music scene after a successful career in law, highlighting the transformative power of music in later life. The quintet's performances, which began in 2019, have become a cherished part of the community's activities. This event illustrates the vital role of live music in enhancing the quality of life for seniors, fostering connection and joy.
