Beloved Berkeley hub Babette announces closing date The Miranda shuts down after 9 years

Oakland, CALocal News

Babette, a cherished restaurant in Berkeley, will close on October 31 after 14 years of serving the community. Owners Joan Ellis and Patrick Hooker announced the closure via Instagram, attributing their decision to insurmountable financial challenges, including difficulties in repaying a Small Business Association loan acquired during the pandemic. Before closing, Babette will host three more live music events and one final wedding, providing a last chance for patrons to enjoy the venue. Meanwhile, The Miranda cocktail bar in Oakland shuttered unexpectedly over the weekend, with no explanation offered for its closure. Known for its affordable drinks and vibrant atmosphere, The Miranda was a staple in the Uptown area near the Fox Theater.

Both establishments played significant roles in their communities, and their closures reflect the ongoing economic pressures facing local businesses in the East Bay. Babette emphasized its commitment to organic and sustainably-sourced food during its operation, while The Miranda offered a stylish ambiance for social gatherings. These closures may signal broader concerns regarding the sustainability of small businesses in the region.
