A day of scooting, biking, and walking for Oakland schoolkids

Oakland, CALocal News

Peralta Elementary School students participated in International Walk & Roll to School Day, promoting walking and biking as green transportation options. Of the 289 students, 96 walked to school, while 45 used bikes or scooters. This initiative reflects a push against the alarming statistic that active transport among children has plummeted from 71% to 18% over a generation. Evan Magers, a parent organizer, expressed enthusiasm for the event, especially regarding the colorful pencils awarded to participants. Funded by Alameda County’s Measure BB sales tax, the program aims to encourage outdoor activity and safety.

Matt Glaser, a local parent, created a map detailing safe routes for students, highlighting the need for safer crossings around busy streets. He noted that increased participation could lead to enhanced safety through community presence. The event aligns with broader efforts to foster healthier habits among children in Oakland.
