Oakland launches an e-bike lending library

Oakland, CALocal News

Oakland's electric bike rental program has officially launched, three years after its initial announcement, with 50 e-bikes available for residents. Mayor Barbara Lee, during a press conference, expressed excitement about the initiative's potential to promote affordable and sustainable transportation. Low-income residents can rent the bikes for $20 for four weeks, while the standard rate is $120. Renters must be at least 18 years old and provide a $500 deposit, which is refundable upon returning the bike. The e-bikes, which have been modified for security, retail for about $2,500.

City officials, including transportation department staff, are open to adjusting the deposit requirement if it proves too challenging for renters. This program is particularly significant for working families in the Fruitvale neighborhood, aiming to enhance mobility in the area. The city plans to monitor usage data, ensuring privacy by anonymizing individual user information.
