Culture Makers Celebrating Oakland immigrants and working on the frontlines
Oakland will host a gathering on September 18 to celebrate immigrant contributions and discuss local support efforts amid federal immigration challenges. The event, taking place at the New Parkway Theater, features a conversation with key advocates such as Abby Sullivan Engen from Centro Legal de la Raza and Gabriela Galicia from Street Level Health Project. They will share insights on navigating legal issues and accessing healthcare, emphasizing the critical resources available to immigrants. The evening will also include performances by Oakland Youth Poet Laureate Cael Dueñas-Lara and Vice Poet Laureate Sehinne Yohannes. Guests who arrive early can receive original art prints from local artists involved in the Sanctuary City Project, which fosters dialogue around immigration.
This initiative has engaged local communities since 2017, highlighting the importance of participatory art-making. The event reflects Oakland’s ongoing commitment to supporting its diverse immigrant population and advocating for their rights. Local organizations continue to play a crucial role in uplifting immigrant voices and addressing the challenges they face.
