Oakland, CALocal News

Dr. Denise Sadler, the interim superintendent of Oakland Unified School District, welcomed students and families on the first day of classes at Martin Luther King Junior Elementary. This day marks her first school year in the role, which she assumed on July 1. Dr. Sadler highlighted fiscal stability as her primary challenge, indicating that tough decisions regarding school closures may be needed to meet district goals.

She stated, “We have to see what we have to do,” stressing the importance of community involvement in this process. The district faces additional challenges, including lead contamination, with 17% of water sources tested exceeding safety levels. Officials have identified the issue and are actively working on solutions. Dr. Sadler, whose contract lasts at least a year, is laser-focused on making necessary infrastructure changes.
