East Oaklands Argent Materials reaches a settlement over pollution violations
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District and Argent Materials have finalized a settlement addressing multiple air quality violations at the company's recycling facilities in East Oakland. Argent must install air quality monitoring systems at both of its locations and has agreed to dismiss its appeal of a denied permit application that cited "toxic emissions" as a health risk. The air quality district issued two notices of violation to Argent for non-compliance with particulate matter regulations. Should Argent adhere to the settlement's terms and maintain monitoring for three years, the district will resolve outstanding violations without penalties. Conversely, failure to comply could lead to fines of up to $500 per day.
Philip Fine, the district's executive officer, emphasized the agreement's importance for public health and community accountability. Additionally, Argent submitted a new permit application, with the air district expected to decide by September 30. The settlement represents a significant step toward addressing environmental concerns in a community already facing air quality challenges.
