Some OUSD schools continue to face high amounts of lead in water, testing shows
Hillcrest Elementary in Oakland reported that seven water fixtures tested above the legal lead limit as students began orientation. Parent Daniel Clendenning expressed moderate concern, noting improvements since last year's issues. Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) has stricter lead benchmarks than federal standards, testing over 2,500 outlets this summer. While 83% of water sources were below 5 parts per billion, some locations, like Castlemont High School, reached 50 ppb. Dr.
Peter Chin-Hong emphasized that lead exposure can be harmful to children, although water is not the primary source. Lead exposure can lead to learning disabilities and developmental delays. Oakland Education Association President Kampala Taiz-Rancifer criticized the district's ongoing lead issues, citing a prior initiative to close McClymonds High School due to similar concerns. OUSD anticipates completing fixes at Hillcrest by next month to improve water safety.
