Alameda County has the Bay Areas third-highest eviction rate

Oakland, CALocal News

Eviction lawsuits surged across the Bay Area after the lifting of COVID-19 moratoriums, with nearly 22,000 cases filed between July 2023 and June 2024. Alameda County reported a 2. 3% eviction rate, the third highest in the region, following Solano and Contra Costa counties. The Bay Area Housing Finance Authority published a study and an interactive tool that detail eviction patterns and their demographic impacts. The tool shows that nonpayment of rent is the leading cause of eviction attempts, with Oakland experiencing 91% of cases due to missed rent.

The study found that areas with majority non-white populations are 78% more likely to face eviction lockouts compared to predominantly white areas. Additionally, 37% of eviction lawsuits in the region resulted in default judgments, suggesting many tenants lack legal representation. The data presented in the study is incomplete, with several areas lacking available information. Local policymakers aim to use this data to better protect tenants in the region.
