National Night Out brings neighbors together in deep East Oakland, Grand Lake, Lakeshore, and Oak Knoll
On August 6, Oakland residents celebrated National Night Out, hosting over 200 block parties to enhance community engagement and public safety. Mayor Barbara Lee and Police Chief Floyd Mitchell joined various neighborhood gatherings, answering resident questions and promoting local ties. Debbie Raucher, a block party organizer since 2015, highlighted the event's role in fostering belonging among neighbors. At the Tassafaronga Village Apartments, children enjoyed face painting while residents accessed resources from local nonprofits. Rita McKeon described this year's event as "more low-key," yet filled with activities for all ages.
The Oakland Roots donated game tickets to encourage attendance, showcasing community support. Bill Thomasson and Ben Austin, who have hosted their block party for 20 years, shared how neighborly communication through WhatsApp strengthens their community ties. National Night Out remains a critical event in Oakland, promoting safety and connection amid urban challenges.
