The Ballers hottest rivalry? Its with their Central Valley siblings
The Yuba-Sutter High Wheelers, a new team in the Pioneer League, have quickly established themselves as rivals to the Oakland Ballers after eliminating them from the playoffs last year and claiming the league championship. Founded last year as the Yolo County High Wheelers, they initially struggled with attendance and logistical challenges while playing at UC Davis. After moving to a new, lighted stadium in Marysville, the High Wheelers aim to enhance their connection with the local community. The teams have faced each other 39 times, with the High Wheelers winning 19 of those matchups, including two playoff victories. Jack Zalasky, a second-year reliever for the High Wheelers, emphasized the rivalry's intensity, saying it makes players eager to win.
Pioneer League President Michael Shapiro noted that managing two teams strained ownership's focus, contributing to the challenges faced by the High Wheelers. The teams will meet for a crucial four-game series in Oakland this weekend, concluding their regular-season matchups. This rivalry not only highlights local sports dynamics but also reflects the evolving landscape of independent baseball in the region.
