Parole agent fatally shot in Oakland, suspect taken into custody after massive search

Parole agent Joshua Byrd, 40, was shot and killed on Thursday afternoon in East Oakland, leading to the arrest of 48-year-old Bryan Keith Hall. The shooting occurred at the Division of Adult Parole Operations, where Hall allegedly shot Byrd around 12:50 p. m. Witnesses reported concern over the police's use of flash bangs during Hall's apprehension. Governor Gavin Newsom ordered flags at the State Capitol to fly at half-staff to honor Byrd, acknowledging his integrity and courage.

This marks the first line-of-duty death for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation since 2018. Byrd began his career in corrections in 2014 and transitioned to a parole agent role in October 2024. Jeff Macomber, secretary of the department, expressed condolences to Byrd’s family and the law enforcement community. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist Byrd's family in the wake of this tragedy.
