Oakland Unified hires first executive director of safety
Nelson Alegria has been appointed as the first executive director of school safety for Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), following a unanimous school board decision in June 2020 to eliminate its police department. Alegria, previously with the Alameda County Office of Education, aims to enhance safety protocols while prioritizing racial justice and student well-being. His responsibilities include coordinating safety procedures, overseeing security staff, and assessing security threats. OUSD has experienced a series of safety incidents, including a fatal shooting in 2022 and recent violence at Skyline High School. Since 2021, the city has invested more than $6 million in violence prevention measures in schools, leading to a reported 10% reduction in high school suspensions for physical violence.
Alegria's new role is part of OUSD's broader efforts to foster a positive school climate through trauma-informed and equitable strategies. The district has also implemented measures like secured entryways and culture keepers to maintain safety. Alegria starts his role on July 24, 2025.
