The inside scoop How one of the Bay Areas favorite ice cream shops creates a new flavor
Sydney Arkin, owner of Bad Walter’s Bootleg Ice Cream, opened her shop in September 2024, turning a pandemic hobby into a successful business in Rockridge. With 13 employees, the shop has created approximately 115 unique flavors, all lactose-free, emphasizing creativity in both flavor and names. Arkin's background in advertising plays a crucial role in her ability to develop innovative flavor combinations. The shop's popular “Sexual Chocolate” flavor features dark chocolate, Amarena cherries, and marshmallow fluff, showcasing Arkin's creative process. Currently, Bad Walter’s is testing a new flavor inspired by a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, in partnership with Rize Up Bakery.
Each flavor is crafted to appeal not only through taste but also through imaginative naming, which Arkin considers essential. The shop’s commitment to quality and creativity reflects its local roots and community engagement. Bad Walter's has quickly become a beloved destination for ice cream lovers in the Bay Area.
