Can a new developer finally get Oak Knoll off the ground?

Oakland, CALocal News

Freehold Communities is making strides to kickstart the long-delayed Oak Knoll housing project in Oakland, with hopes to initiate construction on 290 homes by early 2026. The project, which includes a total of 918 homes and commercial spaces, has faced numerous delays since its initial approval nearly a decade ago. Factors such as high interest rates, soaring construction costs, and local permitting challenges have stalled progress. Brad Shuckhart, Freehold's regional president, noted the company's commitment to expedite the process by preparing home designs in advance for builders. The site, previously a naval hospital, has a complex history of ownership and redevelopment attempts, contributing to community frustrations.

Local residents have expressed disheartening feelings over the prolonged wait for housing development in their area. Freehold's success will depend on its ability to navigate market conditions and attract builders amid ongoing challenges. The future of the Oak Knoll project remains uncertain, but the developer aims for significant progress by 2026.
