Lakeshore Avenue protected bike lane honors Oakland girl who died in collision
Oakland officials broke ground today on a new protected bike lane, paying tribute to four-year-old Maia Correia, who lost her life in a tragic cycling accident two years ago. The project will create a separated two-way bikeway along Lakeshore Avenue and introduce pedestrian safety features, with completion expected in at least one year. Mayor Barbara Lee emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures, stating, "Too many of our residents are killed or injured while biking or walking on our streets. " Councilmember Charlene Wang argued for robust infrastructure, asserting that paint alone does not ensure safety. This initiative emerged from community demands following Maia's death, where a man opened a car door without checking, leading to the accident.
The funding for the project faced delays but was ultimately secured, allowing for its advancement. Attendees at the ceremony included Maia’s family, who expressed their commitment to transforming their grief into action for safer roads. The new bike lane will be named the Maia Correia Bikeway, symbolizing the community's dedication to preventing future tragedies.
