Oakland goes 25 days without a homicide in May, June as crime numbers drop

Oakland, CALocal News

Oakland marked a significant achievement by going 25 days without a homicide from late May into June, showcasing a marked decrease in violent crime. Data through July 6 reveals considerable year-over-year declines in homicides and robberies across the city. Community leader Barbara Lafitte-Oluwole attributed this progress to the Ceasefire program, which has been audited and improved in 2023, focusing on individuals at high risk of engaging in violence. The program employs life coaches to guide potential shooters and victims towards resources, aiming to reduce violence. Oakland police reported no homicides between May 30 and June 25, a remarkable statistic not seen in five years.

U. S. Marshals have also supported local efforts, arresting 21 fugitives over five days, emphasizing the commitment to public safety. While challenges remain, as evidenced by a homicide on July 4th, an arrest was made in that case, demonstrating ongoing law enforcement efforts. Authorities plan additional focused operations in Oakland over the coming months to further enhance safety.
