Which countrys jollof rice is best? Cast your vote at this Oakland event

Oakland, CALocal News

The Jollof Festival in Oakland on July 12 will determine which country serves the best jollof rice, with chefs representing Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and others in a culinary showdown. Founded in 2017 by Ishmael Osekre, the festival arose from heated Twitter debates surrounding jollof rice superiority. Attendees will taste various jollof dishes and vote for their favorites, while a panel of judges will also participate in the voting. Co-producer Quiana Webster emphasizes the cultural significance of the event for the Black community, stating it fosters a deeper understanding of West African traditions. Osekre notes that each country's jollof varies in rice type, mix-ins, and preparation methods, adding to the dish's rich diversity.

Alongside the tasting competition, the festival will include cultural performances, influencer meet-ups, and a kids zone with activities. Local Oakland food businesses will also participate, enhancing community engagement. Tickets start at $31. 72, and children under 10 can attend for free.
